Truth or Consequences is known nationwide principally because of its unusual name. So, how dide it happen that the former "Hot Springs" changed its moniker? Well, remember the old TV show "Truth or Consequences"? In 1950, the show made an offer that, if any town changed its name to ``Truth or Consequences'', the show would do a live broadcast from the town. Hot Springs, New Mexico voted to do it. Ralph Edwards, the producer of the show, liked the town so much that he made it an annual event. So every year he would bring various Hollywood semi-stars with him and have a ``Fiesta'' right in Truth or Consequences.
The former "Hot Springs" grew up around the hot mineral water springs that underlie the city. Early visitors sought relief from aches and pains in these healing waters. Truth or Consequences is today a frequent stopping off place for travelers and tourists. It is a favorite retirement location because of the sunny, dry, moderate climate; the proximity to lakes, mountains, and historical areas; numerous restaurants; and lots of community recreational activities.
Recreational activities abound in the area. Nearby Elephant Butte Lake and Caballo Lake State Park provide excellent fishing, boating, water-skiing, and camping facilities. Activities include the Elephant Butte Balloon Regatta and the Fiesta Golf Tournament & Fiddlers contest, all in April, the T or C Fiesta in May, & the Hillsboro Apple Festival 7 Sierra County Fair in September. October offers the Geronimo Peace Days Gathering and the New Mexico Old Time Fiddlers Contest. Local amenities include a golf course, museums, library, swimming pool, civic center, and numerous motels, restaurants, and campgrounds, and visitors also enjoy the Geronimo Springs and Museum, with area relics,& exhibits from army forts and mining camps, the Water Tank Murals, the Hot Mineral Springs District and Ralph Edwards Park.
