With its picturesque location in the San Juan Mountains, Durango is an ideal place to live or to visit. Durango has an ideal four-season climate with mild temperatures year-round. Winters are mostly mild and sunny. Summers are warm but not hot, and the views year-round are spectacular.
Durango offers plenty of activities for visitors, including the famous Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, a coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive that winds through spectacular & breathtaking canyons in the remote wilderness of the San Juan National. The Animas River has great rafting and the San Juan Mountains offer fabulous hiking and mountain biking during the summer months. The area offers world-class skiing and excellent weather during the winter months. Visitors also enjoy nearby Mesa Verde National Monument, a group of Anasazi cliff dwellings.
The first settlers in the Four Corners area were the Anasazi, who mysteriously vanished around 1300 AD. The Navajo and Ute Indians occupied the area in the 16th century. Spanish explorers visiting the area in 1776 named the local river Rio de Las Animas Perdidas, the "River of Lost Souls" now called the Animas. Durango, meaning “water town,” was founded by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, which decided to build a depot 1.5 miles south of Animas City, then a bustling town of 300 people. The first stake was driven in 1880. A narrow gauge steam engine connected the mining town of Silverton with the coal and smelter operations in Durango. The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad remains in operation today as a popular tourist attraction.
